Behind the Business: At The Joint Chiropractic, Kevin Bock Says Success Starts With Showing Up

Walk into The Joint Chiropractic in Mount Dora and you do not need an appointment, a referral or even an insurance card.

Located along U.S. 441 in Loch Leven Landing, The Joint offers walk-in chiropractic care seven days a week, with licensed chiropractors providing adjustments for patients seeking help with back and neck discomfort, headaches, stiffness, mobility concerns and other everyday aches and pains. The clinic also provides chiropractic care for different ages and stages of life, including pregnancy, youth and active lifestyles.

The model is deliberately different from a more traditional healthcare office.

The Joint does not bill insurance, Medicare or Medicaid. Instead, patients can choose from individual visits, multi-visit packages or monthly wellness plans, with HSA and FSA funds accepted for eligible care. New patients begin with a consultation, examination and, when appropriate, an adjustment. The Mount Dora clinic is also part of a nationwide network approaching 1,000 locations, allowing established patients to receive care while traveling or visiting another community.

For owner Kevin Bock, however, having a national name above the door did not eliminate one of the most basic challenges facing any local business.

People still had to know it was there.

“Always be marketing,” Bock says.

Nearly four years after bringing The Joint Chiropractic to Mount Dora, that lesson has shaped the way Bock approaches both the business and his role in the community.

Making Chiropractic Easier to Fit Into the Day

Convenience is central to The Joint’s business model.

The Mount Dora clinic is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with a weekday lunch closure from 2 to 2:45 p.m. Patients can walk in without scheduling an appointment, including during evening and weekend hours.

That accessibility reflects a broader idea behind the company: chiropractic care does not necessarily have to be something a patient seeks only when discomfort becomes difficult to ignore.

The Joint positions chiropractic as something that can also become part of a regular wellness routine, with plans designed for patients who receive adjustments more frequently and packages or individual visits for those who come less often.

Current Mount Dora pricing reflects those different ways of using the clinic. The location lists a $55 single visit, multi-visit packages and monthly wellness plans, including an adult plan offering up to four visits per month. The clinic also currently advertises a new-patient initial visit that includes a consultation, examination and adjustment when appropriate.

For patients, the concept is relatively simple: walk in when the clinic is open, receive care from a licensed chiropractor and continue with the frequency of care recommended for their individual needs.

That straightforward model is part of what Bock has spent the past four years introducing to the Mount Dora area.

A National Brand Still Has to Build Local Awareness

When Bock chose Mount Dora, he points to the community’s quality of life as part of the appeal.

But opening in a growing area with a recognizable franchise name did not automatically translate into immediate awareness.

Bock identifies that as one of his biggest challenges as a business owner.

His response has been a mixture of social media, organic marketing, sponsorships and involvement in the local business community.

It also taught him one of the less glamorous realities of entrepreneurship: expenses begin immediately, while revenue can take longer to build.

Bock says he has learned that “revenues lag expenses,” while seasonal patterns create another consideration for businesses operating in Central Florida. Summer, in particular, can bring a slower business climate.

Those experiences are behind the advice he now gives other owners.

“Always be marketing,” Bock says.

For him, marketing is not limited to an advertisement or social media post. It includes the repeated work of making the business visible, meeting people and staying connected to the community it serves.

Building a Local Presence

Bock has made the Mount Dora Area Chamber of Commerce one piece of that strategy.

He currently serves on the Chamber’s Board of Directors and has supported Chamber programming as both a Business@Breakfast sponsor and coffee mug sponsor.

Asked how Chamber involvement has affected his business, Bock points to “personal engagement in the community.”

That engagement has helped give a local identity to a business connected to a much larger national network.

The Joint Chiropractic has clinics across the country, and the ability for established patients to use other locations is one of the features Bock says people are often surprised to discover.

At the same time, the Mount Dora clinic operates in a market where personal relationships and word of mouth still matter.

That is reflected in how Bock now measures the health of the business.

He describes success as “commerce coupled with Google testimonials.”

Revenue remains essential, but Bock also looks at what patients are saying after they leave. Online reviews provide another measure of whether the clinic is creating the kind of experience people are willing to recommend to others.

For a business that has spent nearly four years working to increase awareness, those recommendations can also help introduce the clinic to the next patient.

What Patients Can Find at The Joint

The Mount Dora location provides hands-on chiropractic adjustments personalized to the patient following an evaluation by a licensed chiropractor.

According to The Joint, patients commonly seek chiropractic care for issues involving the lower or upper back, neck, headaches, stiffness, mobility and discomfort related to work, exercise and everyday activity. The practice also offers care designed around pregnancy, youth and different activity levels.

The clinic also offers activator-assisted adjustments, which use a handheld instrument to provide a lower-force adjustment when a chiropractor determines that approach is appropriate.

A first visit includes a review of health history and goals along with a clinical assessment. Depending on the patient, that evaluation may include posture, gait, range of motion and other movement-based assessments before the chiropractor recommends an individualized plan of care.

The self-pay structure is another defining feature.

Rather than processing insurance claims, The Joint publishes its pricing and allows patients to choose among wellness memberships, packages and individual visits. Eligible chiropractic expenses can also be paid using HSA or FSA funds.

Together, those elements — walk-in availability, seven-day hours, multiple payment options and access to clinics throughout the national network — are designed to remove some of the logistical barriers that can make routine care difficult to fit into a busy schedule.

Four Years in Mount Dora

This fall will give Bock another reason to bring people through the doors.

The Mount Dora clinic is approaching four years in business, and Bock is planning a Patient Appreciation Day and Open House in October to mark the milestone.

It will recognize the patients who have supported the clinic while also creating an opportunity for people who have seen The Joint around town but may still be unfamiliar with its model to learn more.

In many ways, it brings Bock back to the challenge he identified when the business began: awareness.

Four years of social media, sponsorships, Chamber involvement, patient reviews and community connections have helped build that awareness, but Bock’s advice suggests he does not consider that job finished.

A national brand can provide a recognizable name and a business model.

Building a local business still requires showing up.
