Behind the Business: From Mount Dora's Ice Cream Stroll to Florida Snow Days, Glacial Ice Delivers
When thousands of ice cream samples are being handed out across downtown Mount Dora, there are plenty of details that can go wrong.
Ice should not be one of them.
For the Mount Dora Ice Cream Stroll & Pup Walk, Longwood-based Glacial Ice & Water helped keep things cool, providing the ice needed for one of the community's sweetest events. For the Mount Dora Area Chamber of Commerce, working with the company was refreshingly simple. Communication was quick, coordination was straightforward, and Glacial Ice delivered exactly what was needed.
That experience offered a firsthand look at the approach President Dougie Conigliaro has made central to his business: be responsive, follow through and make life easier for the customer.
But delivering ice is only part of the story. From commercial ice and water deliveries to specialty cocktail ice and real snow for Florida events, Glacial Ice has built a business around solving problems that come in all shapes, sizes and temperatures.
More Than a Bag of Ice
Based in Longwood and serving customers throughout Florida, Glacial Ice supplies bagged ice, specialty ice and water to businesses, events and individual customers.
Its services range from routine commercial deliveries to last-minute emergency orders, helping customers manage both predictable demand and unexpected needs. For bars and hospitality businesses, the company also offers specialty cocktail ice. For larger events, it can coordinate ice deliveries at a scale that goes well beyond the typical cooler.
Conigliaro said the opportunity was to provide a more flexible, personal alternative to traditional suppliers.
“We saw a need for a reliable, responsive ice supplier that could handle everything from everyday deliveries to last-minute emergencies and large events, while giving customers the flexibility and personal service that larger suppliers often can’t provide,” he said.
That range of services has allowed Glacial Ice to serve customers whose needs can vary considerably, but who share one expectation: getting the right product when they need it.
Yes, They Bring Real Snow to Florida
Perhaps the most unexpected part of Glacial Ice's business has nothing to do with keeping drinks cold.
The company also provides real snow for schools, businesses, community celebrations and large-scale events across Florida.
In a state where winter usually means a slightly cooler forecast, Glacial Ice can help turn a school celebration or community gathering into a snow-filled experience.
“People are often surprised to learn how much goes into the ice business,” Conigliaro said. “We don’t just deliver bags of ice; we handle everything from everyday commercial deliveries and specialty cocktail ice to large-scale events with tons of real snow.”
Snow events are also becoming an increasingly important part of the company's plans. Over the coming year, Conigliaro intends to expand Glacial Ice's delivery network throughout Florida while building out its snow-event services for schools, businesses, communities and larger gatherings.
Growing Without Losing the Personal Touch
As Glacial Ice expands, Conigliaro faces a challenge familiar to many small business owners: how to serve more customers without losing the qualities that helped build the company in the first place.
For Glacial Ice, that means balancing growth with the kind of individual attention and responsiveness that customers have come to expect.
“One of the biggest challenges has been managing growth while maintaining the level of reliability and service our customers expect,” Conigliaro said.
His response has been to strengthen the company's operations, develop a dependable team and continually look for ways to improve its service.
That experience has also influenced his approach to leadership.
“One lesson I’ve learned is that you can’t do everything yourself,” he said. “Building a reliable team and strong relationships is just as important as working hard and growing the business.”
The lesson reflects an evolution in how Conigliaro measures success. Early on, bringing in customers and establishing the business were the priorities. Today, he places greater emphasis on building a company that can grow while taking care of its employees, customers and community.
Finding a Place in the Mount Dora Business Community
Although Glacial Ice is based in Longwood, Conigliaro sees Mount Dora as a natural market for the company's continued growth.
He points to the area's expanding business community, its strong network of locally owned businesses and its location within Central Florida.
That interest led Glacial Ice to become involved with the Mount Dora Area Chamber of Commerce, where the company has been able to develop relationships with other businesses and participate more directly in community activities.
“Being part of the Mount Dora Area Chamber of Commerce has helped us build relationships with other local businesses, become more involved in the community, and increase awareness of Glacial Ice and the services we provide,” Conigliaro said.
Its involvement in the Ice Cream Stroll provided a practical example of those relationships in action. While attendees explored downtown and sampled ice cream, Glacial Ice's contribution helped support the behind-the-scenes logistics that make an event of that scale possible.
The company's community involvement also extends to Winter Springs, where it supports the Splash Event, an initiative that teaches families about pool safety for children.
A Reputation Built One Delivery at a Time
For Conigliaro, the future involves more than expanding the company's geographic reach or introducing its snow services to new audiences. It also means protecting the reputation Glacial Ice has worked to establish.
“When we first started, success was about building the business and bringing in new customers,” he said. “Today, success means creating a strong, dependable company that continues to grow while taking great care of our customers, employees, and community.”
His advice to fellow business owners is equally straightforward.
“Focus on building strong relationships and taking care of your customers,” Conigliaro said. “People remember when you’re dependable, responsive, and willing to go the extra mile, and that reputation is what helps a business grow.”
For Glacial Ice, those relationships are helping turn a straightforward product into a growing Florida business — one that can deliver everything from a last-minute bag of ice to an entire winter experience.
